Summary description

The Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy begins with contextualizing international humanitarian law (IHL) within a larger historical, legal, and political narrative. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of the classification of armed conflicts and of the consequences stemming from this classification at the legal and policy level. The program then covers the fundamental areas concerning IHL and related policy areas, including the regulation of hostilities, inherent in which is the balancing of military necessity and humanitarian consideration, and the interplay between IHL and other relevant frameworks, notably human rights law, international criminal law, and domestic law.

Those attending the Core Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy in Nairobi are also encouraged to stay for the two-day Thematic Workshop (9-10 November). If you are interested in staying for the Thematic Workshop, please simply indicate it in your application to the Core Professional Training – there is no need to apply separately for the two events.
