For me PHAP is a great opportunity to meet likeminded people with a diverse range of field experience and theoretical backgrounds. PHAP to me is about expanding knowledge.

    The 2016 Ordinary Meeting of the PHAP General Assembly was held on 22 June 2016 with members of the association participating both online and at the secretariat’s office in Geneva. Apart from regular administrative business, the General Assembly adopted the new Strategic Framework and the amended bylaws of the Association, and elected three new members to the Board of Directors.

    On 19 July 2016, Naz K. Modirzadeh and Dustin A. Lewis from the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (PILAC) provided an update to close to 150 online participants in a PHAP Expert Briefing on the effects of U.N. sanctions on principled humanitarian action, the discussion around “humanitarian exemptions,” the benefits and costs of such exemptions, and why it is important for humanitarian actors to engage in this debate. PILAC also recently published a briefing memorandum on this topic, which helps clarify the concepts and issues under debate.

    The World Humanitarian Summit is taking place next week in Istanbul, 23-24 May. PHAP members from all over the world will be involved in a variety of ways, both independently and on behalf of their organizations – participating in High-Level Roundtables, Special Sessions, side events, the Expo, and the Innovation Marketplace.

    PHAP ran a major survey earlier this year – it gathered responses from more than 3,000 humanitarian practitioners worldwide, representing the full diversity of individuals engaged in humanitarian action.

    On 12 April, at the International Association Awards ceremony in Berlin, PHAP was presented the award for “Effective Voice.” Recognizing the association’s work to strengthen discussion and engagement on critical issues among practitioners in their individual professional capacity, the award highlighted in particular the consultation events organized in support of the World Humanitarian Summit.
