    Since PHAP was founded by a small group of individual humanitarian practitioners in 2010, each year has brought exciting new developments. Thousands of members have joined, from all over the world; new member activities and benefits, including live online events have started and grown; and the substantive and geographic expansion of PHAP’s respected Professional Development Program on Humanitarian Law and Policy continues.

    “PHAP is a small ray of hope in the darkness that many of us feel these days. We have a place to come together to not just learn but also to explore new ways,” said Naz Modirzadeh in her nomination speech to the PHAP Board of Directors at the meeting of the General Assembly on 16 December 2015. “PHAP is addressing a need and providing a forum for a conversation that is not occurring anywhere else.”

    The 2015 PHAP Annual General Assembly, chaired by PHAP President Karen Koning AbuZayd, will be held on 16 December 2015. The General Assembly will be accessible, either in person in Geneva or by teleconference over the web. This meeting is primarily to complete regular annual administrative business, as well as to elect a new member onto the Board of Directors.

    In 2015, the Global Protection Cluster (GPC) will update its Strategic Framework and revitalize its structures to react better to the needs of the field. As part of the consultations for this revision, PHAP fielded a survey to its members and wider contact network in September in order to gather inputs from individual practitioners in the area of humanitarian protection.

    The upcoming World Humanitarian Summit has intensified discussion on the humanitarian principles. Opinions vary – with some seeing them as unrealistic, irrelevant ideals, while others believe that our most urgent need is a commitment to the practice of principled humanitarian action. What emerges from the disparate voices is a clear need for discussion of the principles grounded in the operational challenges confronting humanitarians today.
