On 21 November, the World Humanitarian Summit regional consultation for the Europe and Others group of states was introduced to interested stakeholders in an online event hosted by PHAP. With speakers from some of the main actors responsible for the preparatory work for the region and more than 100 interested individuals following the discussions in real time, the event was a promising start to the upcoming regional process.

The regional World Humanitarian Summit consultation for the Europe and Others group of states will begin at the end of this month. Following on PHAP’s support for the Summit process, the association will be hosting a series of live online consultation events for the region leading up to the regional event in Budapest, Hungary, in February 2015.

The World Humanitarian Summit will soon be starting its fourth regional consultation, with a focus on the Europe and Others group of states. Recognizing that their active participation in this consultation process is essential to achieving a more effective and professional global humanitarian response capacity, PHAP members have been providing their expertise and views in the first months of the consultation in several different ways.

The spring 2015 calendar for PHAP’s courses on humanitarian law and policy is now available. Responding to the growing demand from professionals in the humanitarian sector for a clear and practical articulation of the applicable rules and policies guiding humanitarian assistance and protection in situations of armed conflict, PHAP organizes training courses on humanitarian law and policy in key locations around the world.

While traditionally considered to be mutually exclusive, a multiplicity of actors – including governments, armed opposition groups, activists, and academic and policy experts – have increasingly referred to both international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) as applicable in armed conflicts. As part of a collaboration with the UNICEF regional office for Middle East and North Africa, PHAP organized a special course on the protection of children in times of armed conflict in Amman on 9 and 10 September 2014.
For me PHAP is a great opportunity to meet likeminded people with a diverse range of field experience and theoretical backgrounds. PHAP to me is about expanding knowledge.
